CAMERON COUNTY AWARDED $750,000 FEDERAL GRANT TO IMPROVE LAURELES REGIONAL PARK

Cameron County is pleased to announce the $750,000 grant award from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support major improvements at Laureles Regional Park.

The grant was secured through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which will pass the funds to Cameron County as the subrecipient. The total project cost is estimated at $1.5 million, with completion expected by September 2028.

Planned improvements at Laureles Regional Park include a new nature trail with native landscaping, new playground, outdoor fitness equipment and shade structures, upgraded picnic facilities and site amenities, water catchment system to support sustainable irrigation, solar lighting, fencing, and new signage, and replacement of sports-field lighting.

“This project reflects our commitment to enhancing quality of life, promoting health and wellness, and preserving our natural environment. We are grateful to the National Park Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife for their partnership and support. Thank you to Senators Cornyn and Cruz and Representative Vicente Gonzalez for advocating for this award,” stated County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

“This is a transformative investment in one of our most beloved community spaces. Laureles Regional Park has long served as a gathering place for families, youth sports, and outdoor recreation. With this funding, we’re taking it to the next level—making it more inclusive, sustainable, and enjoyable for generations to come,” stated Commissioner Pct. 3 David A. Garza.

Located within Cameron County Precinct 3 in the heart of San Benito, Laureles Regional Park is a vital recreational hub for Cameron County residents. The upcoming improvements will ensure the park remains a safe, accessible, and vibrant space for all.
