CAMERON COUNTY SHINES AT RGV PARTNERSHIP TRANSPORTATION AND TRADE CONNECT SESSION IN MISSION, TEXAS
On February 25, 2026, Cameron County’s long-term vision for strategic infrastructure and economic growth took center stage as County Administrator Pete Sepulveda, Jr., participated in a regional transportation and trade panel hosted by the RGV Partnership. The session brought together leaders from across the Rio Grande Valley to discuss the region’s rapidly evolving economic landscape and the infrastructure required to support it.
For decades, the Cameron County Commissioners’ Court has prioritized forward-looking investments in transportation. Those efforts have positioned the county as one of only two counties in Texas with six modes of transportation: highway, rail, airport, seaport, pipeline, and space. With transformative employers such as SpaceX and Rio Grande LNG (RGLNG) reshaping the regional economy, Cameron County’s multimodal network has become a cornerstone of its competitiveness.
To meet the demands of a fast-growing region, Cameron County and the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA) have developed a $2 billion system of transportation projects designed to attract new industries, strengthen supply chains, and enhance the safety and mobility for residents and businesses. These investments reinforce Cameron County’s role as a model for strategic, well-coordinated infrastructure planning.
Cameron County is currently experiencing unprecedented job growth, with SpaceX and RGLNG each surpassing the 5,000-employee milestone. In response, the County has accelerated efforts to support workforce development, expand transportation capacity, and address infrastructure needs tied to major industry expansion. In addition, the County also recently completed a comprehensive State Highway (SH) 48 Master Plan, outlining short, mid, and long-term improvements along SH 48 and FM 511 from SH 48 to SH 4—corridors essential to industrial
A key initiative highlighted during the panel was the County’s development of an Energy, Space, and National Security Sector, a concept modeled after successful frameworks in other regions of Texas. Establishing this sector will help streamline planning, strengthen coordination with state partners, and unlock new funding opportunities for critical transportation safety enhancement projects. Because these industries rely heavily on the County’s International Bridge System, Cameron County continues to prioritize modernization and technology upgrades to ensure safe, efficient, secure, and expedited trade flows.
Key Infrastructure Initiatives Highlighted
- East Loop — Provides essential connectivity to the Energy, Space, and National Security Sector and strengthens a vital international trade corridor. This project eliminates the 24 conflicts between the Veterans bridge and the Port of Brownsville. It’s a major safety project for the traveling public and school children.• Veterans International Bridge Expansion — County investments have increased capacity for commercial and passenger vehicles, including new technology at the commercial import lot. The bridge serves as the southern gateway to I-69E. Safety project for the commercial vehicles entering the CBP import lot.
- Free Trade International Bridge Expansion — Enhancements at the U.S. CBP export lot will support dual inspections by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexican Customs.
- Future Flor de Mayo International Bridge — Presidential Permit received in May 2024; currently in the NEPA process. This bridge will serve passenger vehicles only, reducing congestion in residential areas of Brownsville.
- Gateway International Bridge Modernization — A $265 million federal investment will modernize the port of entry and County Administration Building, increasing capacity and improving efficiency across the bridge system.
Future Gateway Pedestrian Bridge — Presidential Permit received in August 2025. This project will separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic, improving safety and mobility. - Acquisition of the B&M Bridge — Will become the fourth international bridge in the County system and, together with the new pedestrian bridge, will support the Riverfront Development Project, envisioned to include hotels, retail, restaurants, and public spaces.
- US 77 Interstate Corridor — Only three segments remain before achieving a seamless interstate connection from Corpus Christi to Brownsville, unlocking major economic opportunities for the region.
- State Highway 4 Improvements — Cameron County is working with TxDOT on a $190 million reconstruction project from Oklahoma Road to SpaceX’s Starbase facility. This expansion project will enhance safety for the traveling public from Southmost to Boca Chica beach.
The Cameron County Commissioners’ Court will continue to work with our State Legislators in advocating for legislative tools that will allow us flexibility in leveraging funding opportunities for infrastructure improvements in our system of projects.
“Cameron County and the Rio Grande Valley are entering a new era of economic growth, and this Commissioners’ Court is proud to continue the decades of disciplined planning and strategic investment that has paved the way to progress,” stated County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. “Our multimodal transportation system, our international bridge system, and our long-term infrastructure planning are positioning this region as a national model for security, innovation and cross-border trade. We are building the foundation for sustained prosperity for our residents and for generations to come.”
