The Tax Assessor-Collector, elected by registered voters holds the Constitutional Office charged with duties and responsibilities mandated by State Statutes to assess and collect ad valorem tax accounts as identified and valued by the Cameron Appraisal District. The Cameron County Tax Office collects property taxes for 52 taxing entities (school districts, cities and special districts). This includes 16 municipalities, 5 school districts, 4 drainage districts, 10 special districts, and 16 others.  The office also collects beer, wine, and liquor licensing fees.

In addition, acting as an agent for the State, the office issues license plates and registration stickers for over 296,000 vehicles registered in Cameron County, and handles approximately 70,000 motor vehicle title transfers each year.

The Main Tax Office in Brownsville, along with six (6) branch offices in Harlingen, San Benito, Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, Rio Hondo and La Feria are open Monday through Friday (excludes holidays) from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. The two substations located within the City of Brownsville’s Police Departments Community Network Centers are open Monday through Friday (excludes holidays) from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. There are also twelve (12) motor vehicle subcontractors located throughout Cameron County; subcontractors are normally open 7 days a week during the regular business hours of the merchants’; courtesy booths. A convenience fee may be assessed to process these transactions.
